Skills For Care seek host organisations for social care graduates

Skills for Care, home of the National Skills Academy for Social Care, is now seeking applications from social care organisations with the capacity to host a graduate management trainee for 12 months, beginning in January 2016.

Around 20 graduates will be selected based on their values and leadership potential through a robust recruitment process. Trainees should be offered exposure to different aspects of adult social care management and delivery.

This is the sixth year of graduates being placed as trainees across the country as part of the National Graduate Management Training Scheme. In previous years, both graduates and the hosts they have worked with say the scheme has been hugely beneficial to both parties.

Marion Tweed-Rycroft, from Services for Independent Living (SIL), said that the two graduates they have hosted brought fresh perspective to their organisation.

“SIL has been fortunate to have hosted two great graduates, both of whom brought enthusiasm, intelligence and a very positive attitude and a fresh pair of eyes. They have been a breath of fresh air and have helped re-energise the team and drive changes forward.”

Graduates recruited to the National Graduate Management Training Scheme receive a tailored social care training programme, including development days, action learning, mentoring, project work and regular tutorials. Designated placement supervisors are also given access to leadership development training.

The National Graduate Management Training Scheme is an opportunity to bring the most gifted graduates into the social care sector, and to train and develop them into future social care leaders. The scheme also benefits social care organisations by bringing forward new ideas and an alternative outlook on systems and processes. Hosts are required to support their trainee in working to an ambitious development plan, giving them the opportunity to utilise their skills and knowledge.

Skills For Care are now accepting expressions of interest from hosts looking to host a graduate. You must be able to give your trainee access to front line practice or strategic work for 12 months, starting in January 2016. You will also be required to provide a 12 month bursary for your graduate at a cost of £18,000, to support their learning. Discounts are available for micro and small enterprises. All support, recruitment, learning and development costs will be covered by the Department of Health and Skills for Care’s other key partners.
