Missing Schizophrenic Killer Found By Officers

A man who stabbed a teacher to death in North Lanarkshire eight years ago has been found after he went missing from his home almost a week ago. Anthony O’Brien, 37, was sent to the state hospital at Carstairs in 2000 after admitting the attack on Bill Scott in Cumbernauld.

He has since been released into the community but disappeared from his home in Inverness without his medication. Police said they found O’Brien on Wednesday in the Glasgow area. O’Brien was subjected to a restriction order in 2000 after he admitted killing the 56-year-old teacher.

Prosecutors accepted that his responsibility was diminished because of schizophrenia. He was said to be severely delusional at the time and believed he would die if someone hit his head.

A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said: “Anthony O’Brien has now been traced safe and well in the Glasgow area by officers from Strathclyde Police. Police will now take all necessary steps to ensure that Anthony receives the medical care he requires.”
