West Bromwich care worker charged with attempted murder

A care worker has been charged with attempted murder after staff and residents at an old people’s home were taken ill.

Melissa Swift is further accused of making threats to kill in relation to an incident at the West Bromwich care home, last month, West Midlands Police said.

She will appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court later.

Swift, 23, of Hambletts Road, West Bromwich, was arrested on August 4 after several people at the town’s Goldfield Court extra care unit (pictured) had been taken ill with food poisoning-type symptoms.

Up to 16 people reported health problems, including severe headaches, intense nausea and diarrhoea – several required hospital treatment.

All have since made a full recovery.

Goldfield Court, which is run by run by Housing & Care 21, provides “extra care housing” for older people, with 93 flats at the site.
