Carer stole from Home residents

Carer Elaine McCarthy was given a ten-month suspended jail sentence in October after stealing almost £10,000 from adults with learning difficulties.

McCarthy, 32 at the time of sentencing, worked at Gregory House II in Carrington. She had access to residents’ bank cards and pin numbers to help them with their money and used four residents’ cards to withdraw £9,730 from cash machines across the city, magistrates heard.

One resident lost £7,130, another lost £1,480.

McCarthy, of Peel Street, in the Arboretum area, was suspended.

Nurse Christine Silvester was kicked out of the profession in July last year for leaving an arthritic pensioner lying on the floor while she righted a pot plant.

Silvester, 47, left the stunned 66-year-old Down’s Syndrome sufferer for half-an-hour and barked at a colleague not to help him after he had fallen, the Nursing and Midwifery Council heard.

While he was unable to get to his feet, Silvester, the home’s deputy manager, hoovered up the soil claiming it was necessary for “health and safety.”

The 66-year-old had been in Little Barn Care Home in Nottingham for 18 years.

Silvester denied failing to provide appropriate levels of care and misconduct.
