Report: Mental Welfare Commission reports on NHS wards across Scotland

The Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland has published 13 new reports on its visits to NHS hospital wards and units for people with mental ill health, learning disability or dementia.

The reports highlight positive and negative findings from the Commission’s visits, some of which were unannounced. They make recommendations for change where necessary. The Commission expects a response to each of its recommendations within three months of the reports being published.

The reports are for:

• The State Hospital – Lewis and Iona hubs (announced)
• Young People’s Unit, Dundee  (unannounced)
• The Royal Edinburgh Hospital – Jordan and Pentland Wards  (announced)
• Glenlomond, Edinburgh (announced)
• St John’s Hospital, Livingston (announced)
• Fern Ward, Elmood, Aberdeen (unannounced)
• Ravenscraig Hospital, Greenock – Dunrods E &F (announced)
• Beckford Lodge, Iona Ward, Low Secure Facility, Hamilton – (announced)
• Murray Royal Hospital, Perth -The Rohallion Clinic (announced)
• Stratheden Hospital, Cupar – Lindores and Dunino Wards (announced)
• Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Greenock – Langhill Clinic, Acute Assessment Unit (announced)
• Hairmyres Hospital, Glasgow – Wards 19 and 20 (announced)

A Mental Welfare Commission spokesperson said: ” While we found much to commend in care and treatment on these visits, we also found examples of services that must improve, poor ward environments, and delayed discharge.

“We undertake over 100 local visits like these every year. By publishing our reports we hope to help share good practice where we find it, and call for change where services are lacking.”
