Report: Size of Structure of the Adult Social Care Sector in England

A new report from Skills for Care has revealed that number of adult social care jobs in England increased by around 40,000 between 2013 and 2014 taking the total to 1.55 million jobs.

The annual ‘Size of Structure of the Adult Social Care Sector in England 2015’ report, using data from Skills for Care’s National Minimum Data Set for Social Care (NMDS-SC), also shows 18,000 organisations are offering social care services in 39,500 establishments.

Skills for Care CEO Sharon Allen said: “This report is now the gold standard for understanding the size and structure of adult social care allowing the sector and other partners to make coherent policy decisions based on quality robust evidence provided by NMDS-SC.

“This year’s 3% rise in the number of jobs means that we estimate that 1.48 million people are working in our sector. We know our sector will continue to grow and we are grateful to all those employers who have contributed their data which will help us plan for the future workforce with the right values which we will need to find, retain and train.”

Other key findings from the report include:

  • There has been increase of 225,000 jobs in the independent sector since 2009
  • The total number of jobs in care homes with nursing has increased by 50,000 (20%) since 2009
  • There was a 40% increase in jobs, between 2009 and 2014, for CQC regulated non-residential  establishments
  • There were an estimated 16,500 social workers in the adult social care as at 2014 with 15,700 of those jobs in local authorities
