New Book: Could addiction recovery be contagious?

New book is first to examine theory behind recovery capital and contagion through personal accounts of those in recovery.

Strength, Support, Setbacks and Solutions is a new handbook from Pavilion Publishing to empower and support anyone whose life is touched by addiction, professionally or personally.

Using personal stories of recovery and how they link to a developmental model of long-term change, this recovery paradigm is a new approach increasingly being adopted throughout the UK.  This is the first time a book has given rigorous academic scrutiny to the concept.

A key focus of the model is the idea of windows of opportunity in recovery and that the accumulation of individual success is a powerful force which can impact families and whole communities.

This new philosophy for addressing the significant social problem of drugs and alcohol dependency has resulted in a growing movement and increase in recovery oversight organisations and local policies.  It is based on three elements:

  • that recovery is a personal journey of change and growth
  • that it is contagious in that recovery generally is a learned behaviour from other people
  • that individuals’ capacity to catch the contagion of recovery is dependent on the resources and supports they have at the time the opportunities for recovery arise.

The book goes on to examine the unique experiences of addiction professionals who are in recovery and who face the decision of disclosing their recovery status at both a personal and professional level.

Who will the book help?

The handbook will help a wide range of health professionals, professional groups and treatment agencies, students and policy makers and service managers/commissioners. It will also provide insight for people looking to start a recovery journey themselves and their families.

Says Strength, Support, Setbacks and Solutions author, David Best:”The people in the book are long established in their recovery.  They provide evidence of real breakthroughs delivering a message of genuine hope to those touched by addiction.

This is a theory-driven collection of stories that are both comprehensive and rigorous in their description and analysis. I hope people will enjoy reading the fascinating components of the stories – the struggles and early failures – and be encouraged by a fairly consistent pathway to success via this model.”
