Update your CPD training in dementia for FREE with a short online course

The University of Derby’s free online short course ‘Bridging the Dementia Divide’ was originally launched in July, 2015 to improve dementia care and reduce unnecessary hospital admissions for people living with dementia. After receiving high levels of requests to repeat the course, the University made a decision to open enrolment and run the course again.

The popularity of the course came as no surprise. The University takes all the step to ensuring its free online courses go through the same rigorous quality assurance process as all of university courses. By doing so, we have made this course the best it can possibly be.

This is what the learners say about this course:
  • “Having completed 2 of the modules this weekend, I am really enjoying it and getting a lot from it!”
  • “It enhanced my own experiences of dementia and will help me maintain my currency as a Registered Nurse.”
  • “This course has made a difference to my understanding of dementia and has helped me to better manage the care for my mother.”

With over 3000 learners already signed up for the course, peer learning truly enhances the experience, giving all the learners an opportunity to share best practice and advance in the knowledge of local and global approaches.

Course Instructor and Academic Lead for Health and Social Care at the University Of Derby Online Learning, David Robertshaw, said: “We wanted people to look at those living with dementia as a person with feelings, hopes and dreams rather than just look at them as the person down the hall with dementia and leave them be. This course will help you to improve the lives of people with dementia, adopting a person-centred and integrated approach. It is suitable for anyone interested in dementia or for those caring for people with dementia including partners, families and health and social care practitioners.”

Easily Accessible Course Content

A key advantage this free course offers is its accessibility. You can study this course at your own pace on a number of portable devices, including tablets, mobile phones and laptops, as long as you have access to the internet. This makes it ideal for professional carers whose demanding job roles and working hours mean it’s difficult to attend scheduled classes or lectures.

Course units include:

  • Introduction to dementia
  • Communication and compassion
  • Independence, control and quality of life
  • Dementia as a global health priority
  • Integrating care
  • End of life care.
Achieve an E-Certificate on completion

You will be awarded a Mozilla open badge for completing each Unit, these are internationally recognised by many employers and educational institutions and will allow you to display your study achievements, even if you only wish to complete a specific unit.

Upon completion of the course, you will be issued an E-Certificate featuring all earned badges and stating that you have completed the full course, so that you can add it to your CV or education portfolio.

The course launched on 7th of March and you can enrol until 17th April 2016, so don’t miss out on this opportunity to develop your skills and understanding of dementia at no cost.

You can enrol on this course now on the university of Derby website.
