Stand By Me dementia course shortlisted for excellence award
Skills for Health has announced that its Stand By Me dementia e-learning course has been shortlisted for an award at the E-learning Awards 2015 for ‘Excellence in the production of learning content – not for profit sector’.
The course focused on moving away from the traditional style of dementia courses that focus on learning and recalling factual information; with little attention being paid to how learners will actually apply that information in their roles in health or social care.
Instead the course looked at the need for staff to be able to learn about caring for people with dementia in a way that allows them to see good communication and person-centred dementia care as a dynamic entity requiring continual evaluation and adaptation.
This was achieved through focus groups, use of videos in conjunction with advanced reflective techniques and many other interactions. Four of the course sessions are compulsory and learners then select at least one of the role-specific sessions to complete in addition. This enables a flexible structure that can be expanded with additional sessions in the future.
The prestigious E-learning Awards 2015 are described as “The biggest and most hard-fought E-Learning Awards” receiving 400 entries across all categories.
