New Master of Public Health (MPH) launched by University of Essex

The University of Essex Online has announced the launch of a new Master of Public Health (MPH) qualification, which will be delivered entirely online using a virtual learning platform. Studies will combine the flexibility of home learning with high-quality resources and support from experienced tutors.

The first intake will be on 6 October 2015, with three more planned at regular intervals in 2016. The MPH is aimed at individuals looking to further their careers in public health and is suitable for healthcare practitioners living in the UK and internationally.

Students will explore the history of public health, key public health theories, principles of epidemiology and contemporary global public health issues. They will also cover the key concepts behind promoting public health messages such as lifestyle advice, sexual health and reducing health risks. Techniques will also be explored for assessing health needs at a personal, local and national level to aid decision making and priority setting. In addition to gaining an understanding of research methods, students will have the opportunity to complete an independent research project through the completion of a dissertation.

David Dixon, Academic Director for University of Essex Online, said: “The Master of Public Health programme is an exciting addition to our health provision and builds upon the success of our online Masters degree in Infection Control. The MPH is well placed to meet the global challenges facing the health sector where providing access to up-to-date learning has never been more vital. The programme also enables students to learn from others via interaction with healthcare professionals around the world.”

John Roberts, Head of Health for University of Essex Online, said: “The Master of Public Health course is an exciting addition to our syllabus, and we’re proud to guide students through this important field of study to meet the challenges facing the modern Public Health professional.”

The MPH is accessible to interested students internationally with the aim that graduates will be empowered to become successful public health leaders. Graduates will also be well prepared to enter an array of roles in the public health profession as Public Health Project Officers, Health Communication Officers, Data Analysts, Health Protection Specialist, Health Visitors and more.

Upon completion of their online Master of Public Health course, graduates will be invited to attend a graduation ceremony at the University of Essex campus in Colchester.
