Scheme to tackle alcohol abuse in Swansea

A scheme targeting drink-fuelled antisocial behaviour and violence in Swansea has been announced.

Swansea has been named as a Local Alcohol Awareness Area (LAAA), and will see extra support and advice from the Home Office, Welsh Government and Public Health Wales, including developing strategies to tackle the issue.

This week, Home Office officials will visit the city to discuss details further, but it announcement has already been welcomed.

Alun Michael, police and crime commissioner for South Wales, said: “Officers in Swansea have been, and will continue, working closely with partner agencies and members of the community to educate and raise awareness of the dangers of drinking to excess while also ensuring we effectively respond and prevent alcohol related issues.

“With the added support and expertise that we will now receive, I have every confidence that our collective efforts will go from strength to strength and that reductions in crime in Swansea will continue.”
