Professor Fiona McQueen is new Scots Chief Nursing Officer

The Scottish Government has appointed Professor Fiona McQueen as Scotland’s new Chief Nursing Officer, it was announced today.

Professor McQueen has held the post of interim Chief Nursing Officer since November 2014 and has worked in the nursing profession since 1982.

The Chief Nursing Officer’s primary role is to provide professional leadership for the nursing, midwifery and allied health professions, as well as being responsible for overseeing work to improve cleanliness and infection control in hospital and healthcare settings.

Welcoming the appointment, Health Secretary Shona Robison, said: “I am delighted that Fiona has been appointed as Scotland’s Chief Nursing Officer and she brings a wealth of experience to this role.

“Scotland is already seen as a world leader in safe, effective and person-centred care. Nurses, midwives and allied health professionals are absolutely key in the delivery of high quality services day in, day out to the people of Scotland. Fiona’s leadership will ensure our NHS continues to focus on delivering excellent clinical care.”

Professor McQueen said: “Becoming Scotland’s Chief Nursing Officer is a very proud moment in my professional career.

“First and foremost, I am determined to ensure patients, their families and carers are at the centre of the NHS in Scotland.

“I am immensely proud of the work of our nurses, midwives and allied health professionals. I look forward to working with them, and colleagues, more widely to focus on the needs of all people who rely on the services provided by the NHS in Scotland.”

Biography

Professor Fiona McQueen has been an Executive Nurse Director since 1993, firstly in Lanarkshire, and since 1999 with NHS Ayrshire & Arran. Following graduation, her first clinical post was in neurosurgery and she has wide experience across many clinical areas, having practised in Greater Glasgow as well as Lanarkshire and Ayrshire.

As Board Nurse Director in NHS Ayrshire & Arran, Professor McQueen was responsible for providing professional leadership for nurses and midwives and was also the executive responsible for the allied health professions, public involvement and quality, including patient safety. She has been prominent in a range of work at national level and has most recently been chair of the Scottish Executive Nurse Directors group.

Professor McQueen lives in Ayrshire and has 3 children. She has held the post of interim Chief Nursing Officer for Scotland since November 2014. She is an Honorary Professor at the University of West of Scotland.
