Aberdeenshire care home graded ‘weak’ by inspectors
An Aberdeenshire care home has been instructed to make a string of improvements following a visit from inspectors.
In a report produced by the Care Inspectorate, Alastrean House Care Home in Aboyne has been graded as “weak” across all four categories, including quality of care and support.
Inspectors also found nurses at the home spoke to residents ‘negatively’ which could have potentially harmed their dignity.
In one case, staff described a resident who had dementia as ‘talking rubbish’ in their care plan.
The report stated: “A resident who has dementia was described in their care plan as talking rubbish. We found this very concerning and considered it showed a deep lack of respect for the resident and a lack of understanding of the effects of dementia.”
“We observed a member of staff turning off a resident’s emergency buzzer without asking if they needed assistance or if they were okay. This concerned us.”
A spokesman for the Balhousie Care Group who own the home said: “We welcome the constructive feedback from the Care Inspectorate and have implemented a robust action plan to meet each of the requirements and recommendations.
“We will work closely with the Care Inspectorate to address the points for action and remain committed to providing high quality care to the people in our care.”
Alastrean House has 44 bedrooms and is one of 25 care homes run by Balhousie.
