New app to help care workers safely administer meds

The safe administration of medicine is a key area of concern for care and support services across Scotland.  This is reflected in the National Occupational Standards and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) for social services and healthcare, and in the Scottish Qualifications Authority’s (SQA) Health and Social Care: Administration of Medicine PDA.

The SSSC, in partnership with the Care inspectorate, have developed and published a smartphone app, SafeMed designed to provide “just-in-time” learning in this vital area of practice. It will complement learning and development for workers preparing for SVQ assessment and the PDA and is also intended to be used as a day-to-day reference tool for staff.

The content of the app was developed by the Care Inspectorate’s Pharmacy Advisers and the design and development work was carried out by SSSC using funding from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills’ Employer Investment Fund.
