33 firefighters tackle blaze at council building

Former social work building in Haddington was badly damaged in the fire.

A fire has ripped through a former council building in East Lothian causing the roof to collapse.

The disused social work building in Haddington will now have to be demolished after it was badly damaged in the blaze.

As many as 33 firefighters were called to the property in Victoria Park just after midnight on Wednesday.

When they arrived they could not get inside to tackle the flames because parts of the roof had fallen in.

The officers were forced to extinguish the fire from outside the building.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service were still at the scene on Wednesday morning dampening down areas of the building.
