Hundred’s Set To Lose Out On Social Care

A Social work overhaul in Aberdeen will see hundreds of vulnerable adults lose care provision or have it scaled down in the coming months.

More than 3,000 people were to get letters today from the city council about the reforms. The letters state that a social worker will visit within weeks to decide whether their care continues.

The cuts will hit the elderly and adults with learning and physical difficulties.

Only those judged to be “high priority” likely to receive personal care from the council in the future.

It is understood that around 500 people who currently get domestic care only – such as with housework and shopping – will lose the service completely, while others who get personal care may have their provision reduced.

It is also believed the jobs of more than 80 council care staff could be lost.

The change in eligibility criteria is part of an overhaul of the service designed to save millions of pounds and improve efficiency.

Craig Stirrat, pictured, head of planning and policy for services to adults, said people would be concerned about the effect on the vulnerable, but the alternative was to hike up levels of council tax.
