NISCC in knowledge exchange with colleagues form Malta and USA

The Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC) has this month welcomed visitors from Malta and the USA to discuss a range of topics including the regulation of the Social Work Degree and conduct processes.

Debra Gohagan from the Department of Social Work in Minnesota State University met with NISCC Professional Advisers Jan Houston and Brenda Horgan to learn about how NISCC regulates the Degree in Social Work and to find out more about the Professional in Practice (PiP) Framework. Debra brings a group of social work students each year to a contact resolution course at Queen’s University Belfast.

Jan Houston and Colleen Stirling, Head of Conduct at NISCC also met with Stephania Dimech Sant and Carmen Buttigeg from the Department for Social Welfare Standards, Malta where they shared learning about workforce regulation and NISCC’s conduct processes. The visitors had a busy schedule of events in Northern Ireland and were keen to meet with NISCC to share knowledge and learning about the regulation of social work education and training and workforce regulation in Europe and the USA.

Marian O’Rourke, Head of Workforce Development at NISCC said:“These opportunities are important for NISCC in developing our understanding of workforce regulation on an international basis. Such visits offer the potential for connections to be made  and better understand our commonalities and differences to regulation in other jurisdictions.”
