Ambassadors visit NI students to promote careers in care

Three Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC) Ambassadors visited Fort Hill College, Lisburn this week to speak to students interested in a career in early years and childcare.

Janine McEvoy and Danielle Gallagher of Aisling Daycare, Belfast led an interactive session for Year 12 students. Later in the morning Sharon Bushe, Manager of Belfast city centre daycare facility Puddleducks Day Nursery met with a smaller group of Year 11 students.

The students and teachers learned a lot from the visits and it was a great opportunity to hear first hand what working in the sector is like.

Students were interested in learning about what qualifications are useful for this type of work, what are some of the day to day activities in day nurseries, how staff handle challenging behaviour and what opportunities can come from having a childcare qualification.

The visits are part of a wider service available to schools, colleges and other settings where there is an interest in careers in early years/childcare and social care.

About Ambassadors for Careers in Care

The Northern Ireland Ambassadors for Careers in Care service enlists individuals who work in social care and early years roles to share their enthusiasm for the work they do and inspire a new generation to join the sector.

Volunteers from across Northern Ireland have already been recruited and trained to become Ambassadors. These individuals are employed by a range of statutory, independent and voluntary social care and early years employers who support the development of the service.

An Ambassador’s role is to inform, motivate and inspire people to consider care as a positive career choice by describing what working in social care and early years really involves. They do this by visiting schools and colleges, job centres, careers and recruitment event/fairs – any setting where there are students or job seekers requesting advice and guidance about careers.

If you are a teacher or careers advisor and would like an Ambassador to visit your school or college, you can email [email protected] or phone 028 9536 2600 to arrange a visit.
