Clare Woman Urges Victims To Report Rapists To Gardai

The Co Clare woman who waived her right to anonymity after a convicted rapist walked free from court earlier this week is urging other victims to come forward and report their attackers.

Adam Keane from Daragh, near Ennis, was handed down a suspended sentence for attacking Mary Shannon in her home in May 2005. She has since called on the DPP to appeal the leniency of the sentence and her case has led to calls for the introduction of mandatory minimum sentences for rape.

Last night, hundreds of people turned out at Ennis Courthouse for a candlelight vigil in support of Ms Shannon’s campaign for justice.

The mother-of-three is urging other victims not to let her experience discourage them from coming forward and reporting their attackers to the Gardai.
