Police launch probe after elderly care home resident dies following lift collapse

An investigation has been launched into the death of an 87-year-old man after a lift he was using collapsed at a care home.

The man died in Salford Royal Hospital after being injured at the Serendipity Care Home in Urmston (pictured), Greater Manchester.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Parker, of Greater Manchester Police’s Trafford borough, said: “I can confirm that we have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man following an incident at a care home in Urmston.

“This is a complex joint investigation and it will take some time to establish what caused the lift to collapse.”

Police were informed of the man’s death shortly before 2pm on Monday January 30.

Staff from police, the fire service, the Care Quality Commission and Trafford Borough Council have met families of residents to talk about their care and welfare.

A council spokesman said: “Trafford council is aware of the incident and is aiding the police in their investigation as well as supporting the home to manage the needs of the residents during this difficult time.”
