Psychiatric patient to be sentenced for murder of care worker

A psychiatric hospital patient will be sentenced today for murdering a healthcare assistant while she worked at the unit.

Ryan Matthews, 62, fatally stabbed grandmother Sharon Wall (pictured) at Wotton Lawn Hospital, an acute mental health unit in Gloucester, on the morning of July 9.

She died of her wounds at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital an hour later.

Following her death, Ms Wall’s grieving family paid tribute to the 53-year-old victim, who was from the Tuffley area of the city.

They said: “We would like to thank everyone for their support and such kind words that have been said about Sharon.

“She was nothing less than one in a million and to say that she will be missed is an understatement.”

Matthews, who lived at the hospital, admitted killing Mrs Wall at a hearing at Bristol Crown Court in December.

He is due to be sentenced at the same court this afternoon.
