Mayor pledges support for the city’s social workers

The Mayor of the City of Derby, Councillor Fareed Hussain, will be speaking at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the city of the British Association of Social Workers, the UK’s largest professional association for social workers, on 27 June.

A trained social worker, the Mayor’s career in social work started in 1986. At present he is employed as a Service Manager in Ilkeston, managing a team of social workers who mainly work with older people.

Commenting ahead of his address to the event, which brings together social workers from Derby and across the UK, Councillor Hussain said: “This event is a rare opportunity to highlight the important contribution social workers make to people’s lives, wherever they may need support. I very much welcome BASW to Derby and support its on-going efforts to raise the status and standing of social work, both here in Derbyshire and across the UK.”

Janet Foulds, a Derby-based social worker and Chair of BASW’s Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Branch, said: “We need to appreciate our social workers more. The public don’t get to see the complex work that we do in looking after the interests of the most vulnerable people in society to help them lead better lives, but if we can improve that understanding we can make an enormous difference to how we are perceived and how we are resourced.”
