Wirral’s director of social services to step down

WIRRAL’S director of adult social services is to retire after six years’ service. John Webb, who joined Wirral Council in 2004 and became director of adult social services in 2007, is taking early voluntary retirement.

Howard Cooper – currently director of the children and young people’s department – will take his place on an interim basis.

Mr Wilkie said: “I know that John cares deeply about social services in Wirral, and about the needs of vulnerable people. He will be missed by his colleagues, and the many partner and community organisations and individuals he has worked closely with.

“We wish him well for the future, and thank him for his hard work and dedication.”

Mr Webb said: “As a public servant, my objective has always been to see services improve. I now believe that is best served by my departure allowing a fresh start, new thinking and energies to be applied to the demands ahead.

“I will miss many colleagues, including those who have shared their time and wisdom with us on a voluntary basis.”

David Armstrong is likely to replace Mr Cooper at the children and young people’s department.
