Baby Falls From Window Of Mental Health Clinic

A month-old baby boy is in hospital with serious injuries after falling from a window at a mental health clinic which treats post-natal depression. A 29-year-old woman, understood to be the boy’s mother, was held under the Mental Health Act after the incident at The Eastbourne Clinic, in East Sussex.

{mosimage}Police said the baby was now conscious and “stable” at St George’s Hospital, in Tooting, south London. A spokeswoman for the clinic said they were helping with a police inquiry. The baby was critically injured in the fall from a first-floor window on Saturday evening.

He was initially taken to the Eastbourne District General Hospital before being transferred to London. A Sussex Police statement said: “A 29-year-old woman has been arrested and is assisting police as to the circumstances of the incident.”

The BBC understands the woman is no longer in police custody and will not face any charges over the incident. The independent clinic treats “a wide range of post-natal disorders” in its residential Mother and Baby Unit. Up to four mothers and babies can be looked after for an average of six-and-a-half weeks.

The clinic is not being investigated by police, but there will be an internal inquiry followed by a report on the incident to the Healthcare Commission.
