Framework Agreement For Behaviour Therapy

The NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency has finalised a national framework agreement for computerised cognitive behaviour therapy (cCBT) software, widening the available options for treating people with depression and anxiety.

The agreement is based on technical appraisal TA 097 from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) which outlines the benefits of cCBT, such as enhanced wellbeing and a reduction in relapse rates.

The appraisal recommends that trusts purchase cCBT software choosing from two packages: FearFighter supplied by CCBT Limited, for the management of panic and phobia; and Beating the Blues from Ultrasis, for the management of mild and moderate depression. The framework agreement covers these two packages.

In cCBT, the cognitive behavioural therapy is delivered using a computer, complementing or replacing sessions with a therapist. NICE warns that cCBT is not suitable for patients with severe symptoms of anxiety or depression who need more intensive treatment and support from healthcare professionals.

The project was sponsored by the Mental Health Team and Commercial Directorate within the Department of Health.
