Cash Boost Planned For City’s Army Of Carers

Sunderland’s army of carers will get information on what is being done to help them financially. It is estimated there are more than 30,000 carers in the city who look after a family member, friend or neighbour with a long-term illness or disability.

National Carers’ Week 2007 runs from June 11 to 17 and to celebrate there will be a conference at the Stadium of Light on Thursday, June 14, from 9.30am to 2.30pm where carers are invited to attend to discuss services in Sunderland.

Topics to be covered include finance and welfare rights, health, social care, leisure and learning, and employment. As well as finding out what is happening in Sunderland carers will also be able to hear about the Government’s national plans to help carers.

Lisa Hall, Information Worker, Sunderland Carers’ Centre said “This event has been organised to give carers the chance to tell local agencies what help and support they need. It is vital that as many carers as possible attend the conference to make sure the voice of carers is heard. The conference will be an excellent opportunity for carers to influence the future strategy for Sunderland.”
