Children’s Social Care Services Transfer To New Ofsted

From 1 April 2007, responsibility for the regulation and inspection of most children’s social care services in England moved from the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) to the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills – the new Ofsted.

The inspection and regulation of children’s services does not change significantly in the short term, with many CSCI staff transferring to Ofsted and continuing the focus on the experience of children who use services.

The Office of the Children’s Rights Director, Roger Morgan, based within CSCI, also joins the new Ofsted.

CSCI will retain all its functions for adult social care (inspection, regulation, review and performance assessment), including services for younger adults and older people. CSCI continues to regulate and inspect a small number of services that serve both adults and children – some home care services, nurses agencies, care homes (for example, those catering for under 18s in rehabilitation centres) and specialist further education colleges registered as care homes.  In addition, CSCI’s retains a keen interest in the transition from children’s to adults’ services.
