Family justice group produces guide to legal language for children and young people

A group that aims to improve children’s experiences of the family court system has produced a child’s guide to legal language.

The Family Justice Young People’s Board says children embroiled in family court disputes can have difficulty understanding some words and phrases.

Members have created a glossary of terms to help youngsters and published it on the internet.

Words and phrases include adjournment, barrister, family court, foster carer and judge.

Ministry of Justice officials say they are discussing ways to “improve children’s participation in family court proceedings” with senior judges.
