Social work party sparks anger
A DISABLED woman facing a huge hike in care charges has slammed plans for a social work celebration party.
Linda Murray, 58, who is facing a 7,000 per cent rise in council fees, described the bash as “a slap in the face”.
The council’s Big Thank You cost the taxpayer £13,000 last year – and there are plans for a similar event in 2011.
But Miss Murray believes that it is an insult to people, like her, who are facing increased care charges.
She said: “It seems excessive to be spending this money, especially when they are talking about saving.
“It is a real slap in the face for anyone who has to pay these higher bills.”
Miss Murray, of Charnwood Gardens, Dumfries, was told by social workers her care bill would rocket from £21 to £1,464 a week under new council rules.
She receives 58 hours of care each week after spinal injuries that she suffered in a car crash 40 years ago left her paralysed.
Labour Group leader Ronnie Nicolson boycotted last year’s event.
He said: “Social work staff do a terrific job, but it has to be understood that we are in hard financial times.”
Disabled group DG Voice have also expressed concerns over the party.
A council spokesman said: “It is our intention to hold another social work services awards event later this year.
“Planning is still at an early stage.”
