Domiciliary Care Workers help people retain their independence and carry on living within their own homes, helping them with personal and practical tasks such as preparing meals or washing and dressing.  Meanwhile, day services staff are based at local day centres and other community locations where they attend to the personal needs of people and help them take part in different activities.

There are many different types of residential services and supported living schemes for people who are older or have physical disabilities, learning disabilities or mental health problems.  Staff working in these services range from support workers who assist individuals with personal care and day-to-day activities through to managers who supervise care worker teams and ensure the smooth running of residential homes and projects.

Social Workers hold professional qualifications in social work and often act as the first point of contact.  They assess the needs of people and devise, implement and review care plans to help improve people’s lives.  Social workers are employed by local authorities, hospitals and mental health units or may work with health specialists as part of a multi-disciplinary care team.

Social care services also help children from disadvantaged backgrounds or young people with physical or learning disabilities.  The staff who work with them act as role models and can fulfil roles similar to parents and teachers.  They may be based at residential units, community projects or even within their own homes.
