Consultation: UK policy framework for health and social care research
The NHS Chief Scientist Office is working with the Health Research Authority and other devolved administrations in developing a new UK policy framework for health and social care research.
Currently each of the four UK departments including the Department of Health, the Department for Health and Social Services (Wales), the Scottish Government Health Directorates and the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (Northern Ireland) have their own research governance frameworks. The plan is to replace these with just the one UK-wide policy document. It will explain in detail the principles of good practice in the management and conduct of health and social care research in the UK.
What is the UK policy framework?
The UK policy framework for health and social care research sets out principles of good practice in the management and conduct of health and social care research that take appropriate account of legal requirements and other standards. These principles protect and promote the interests of patients, services users and the public in health and social care research, by describing ethical conduct and proportionate, assurance-based management of health and social care research, so as to support and facilitate high-quality research in the UK that has the confidence of patients, service users and the public.
