Research in Practice (RiP) have published a series of new publications which examine how we can meaningfully involve children and young people, gain a better understanding of adolescent mental health, look at how to develop improved support for family and friends care (kinship care), and provide practical guidance to support LSCBs in monitoring local safeguarding and child protection activity/practice.

Practice Tool: Assessing and supporting family and friends care
Research, policy and recent judicial decisions all provide imperatives for improving the timely assessment and provision of support for family and friends care. Although research has established that kinship care is a good placement option for many children, it does not guarantee that a placement will last, or promote children’s wellbeing. Good assessment, preparation and support are therefore crucial.
The aim of this Practice Tool is to assist practitioners in the processes of assessing the strengths and weaknesses of prospective placements with family and friends and identifying the assistance families might need to provide a safe and effective long-term home for a child.
