New Book: Guide to Autism and Asperger’s self-diagnosis for adults
AM I AUTISTIC? is a new style of self-help book for the UK and US market which takes the reader through a step-by-step guide to autism self-diagnosis and also looks at the wider cultural issues that affect autistic people.
Originally launched in April 2015 as a digital-only title, the AM I AUTISTIC? print edition is now moving to a full release and will be available from December 1st 2015.
“So much is written about autism by people who are not autistic, I thought it would be useful to write a self-help book for adults who think they might be autistic and would like to learn more about autism and the road to self-diagnosis and/or the formal diagnosis process from the view of an autistic person.” Lydia Andal, Author
As well as assisting those who are wondering if they sit on the autistic spectrum, this guide is also useful for those who are already clinically diagnosed as they can find out more about the origins of the clinical view of autism and the potential challenges faced by those who declare their autistic status to friends and colleagues in their social or work environment.
The Challenges of the Professional Autistic
The guide explores the Author’s experience of being autistic in a corporate environment and examines the many ‘Invisible Autistics’ who are undiagnosed or ‘in the closet’ in the workplace and the difficulties they can face.
Temple Grandin, the renowned autistic agricultural scientist and author who had a HBO film made of her life story says of AM I AUTISTIC?:
“Love the first chapter in Andal’s book which describes all the undiagnosed autistic people who have good employment. You need to read the first chapter to see how people on the spectrum are contributing greatly to society.”
Autistic Person or a Person ‘with’ Autism?
This guide also looks at some of the cultural debates held within the autism community including why some autistic people prefer not to be called a person ‘with’ autism and why others don’t mind.
Self-Diagnosis or Clinical Diagnosis?
Some people are content with identifying as autistic without going through the clinical diagnosis process, others appreciate a view from a medical practitioner. This guide addresses both and includes an in-depth look at the steps in the UK and US clinical diagnosis process as well as the self-diagnosis route.
