SCIE call for good practice examples on women affected by dementia
This year has seen the publication of two reports highlighting the fact that dementia disproportionately affects women. (Alzheimer’s Disease International and Women and Dementia: a marginalised majority)
Behind these important facts and figures are women’s stories. SCIE has been supporting Innovations in Dementia (IID) as part of a Joseph Rowntree Foundation project to collect and publicise the experiences of women affect by dementia, be they women with a diagnosis, women caring for family or friends with the disease or women in the workforce who care for people with dementia.
One of the findings is that some women affected by dementia would welcome women-only services. Women dominate the services that are routinely provided but this is primarily because of the greater number of women involved and men often find it difficult to engage with services, rather than because the services have been designed with women ‘in mind’. It is may be there are good examples of services targeted specifically at women affected by dementia, and SCIE just don’t know about them.
SCIE would like to celebrate good practice and help encourage others to think about the services they provide for the women affected by dementia. Examples of good practice will be shared through the IID project website (Dementia in woman) and will help to inform SCIE’s work in this area.
To participate send your details to Nada Savitch, providing a short paragraph summarising the good practice plus contact details, so SCIE can seek additional information if required.
