Imagining the Future

What might social services look like in 2025?

In 2013 IRISS ran a series of workshops to help us understand the technical, medical and cultural forces that will shape the future.  These workshops informed three ‘think pieces’ or reports – on citizenship, the workforce and technology.

To bring these reports to life, and to promote discussion, we have also produced a short animation of what life may be like in ten or fifteen years time for Alex Chisholm, a man in his 70s with multiple conditions, poor diet and high alcohol consumption.  We suggest that by 2025 people may have the possibility of richer, less isolated lives in which they are able to exercise more choice and control.

As the animation progresses, you are invited to follow links to relevant sections of the three reports, as well as external sources, for more information and discussion.

Building on these explorations, we are now launching a second phase of work: a National Scenario Planning Project to consider the evidence, assumptions and drivers-of-change set out in the reports. The scenario project will run throughout 2014 and will involve:

  •     A series of themed workshops
  •     A three-day leadership programme and
  •     Arts-based participation events

This phase will conclude with the publication of four different scenarios for Scotland and social services, set in 2025.

The project is open to everyone with an interest in the future of social services and the 2014 programme of events will be launched at a special gathering of 100 delegates on 27 January at the Scottish Parliament.
