New Learning Disabilities Core Skills Education and Training Framework launched
Skills for Health, Health Education England and Skills for Care have launched a comprehensive new resource to support health and social care staff and educators in England who work with people living with a learning disability.
The Learning Disabilities Core Skills Education and Training Framework sets out the essential skills and knowledge necessary for all staff involved in the delivery of learning disabilities services.
The framework will support organisations to:
- Standardise the interpretation of learning disabilities education and training
- Guide the focus and aims of learning disabilities education and training delivery
- Ensure the educational relevance of learning disabilities training
- Improve the quality and consistency of education and training provision
The framework also supports training needs analysis, performance management processes and the assessment of competence.
John Rogers (pictured), Chief Executive of Skills for Health said: “The key to the wellbeing of people living with a learning disability is the quality of care and commitment provided by those who work with them. The framework outlines the learning and education training for the learning disabilities workforce at an assured standard.
“Employers and/or commissioners of education are encouraged to use the framework as guidance for the development and delivery of appropriate and consistent education and training. We believe that use of the framework will result in an increased quality of care for people and their families.”
Who is the framework for?
The framework is aimed at employers, their employees, educational commissioners and organisations that train students who will be employed in the range of health and care settings.
Commissioned and funded by the Department of Health the development of the framework was led by Skills for Health, Health Education England and Skills for Care in collaboration with a number of key stakeholders and experts in learning disability care.
This framework builds on the existing Statutory/Mandatory and Clinical/Care core skills frameworks currently available from Skills for Health.
