University of Wolverhampton signs new five-year courses partnership with care provider

A partnership offering specialist courses to healthcare staff has been signed between the University of Wolverhampton and Compton Care.

The courses provide opportunities for healthcare professionals to further develop their knowledge and skills and to gain a recognised qualification.

The University of Wolverhampton works in collaboration with Compton Care, a charity which provides care and support for people living with complex and incurable conditions, to deliver courses at certificate, undergraduate and postgraduate level.

A memorandum of co-operation to continue working together for the next five years was signed this week. The new agreement reflects the strength and quality of the partnership, which has been in operation for over 15 years.

The courses focus on palliative and end of life care and lymphoedema, a condition that occurs when there is damage to the body’s lymphatic system, resulting in large, and sometimes uncomfortable swelling. It can affect any part of the body but is usually found in the arms or legs.

Professor Ian Oakes, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Wolverhampton, said: “The courses have a focus on preparing healthcare professionals who want to be there for people who have been diagnosed with an advanced, complex or incurable condition, partnering with them to give them the care, support and encouragement they need to live their best life for months and years, rather than just weeks or days.

“Our range of courses help clinicians to develop their knowledge and understanding of all aspects of palliative care and lymphodema, supported by a team of academics and clinical specialists working with students to reach their full potential.”

Dr Katherine Birch, Head of Learning & Development at Compton Care, said: “The courses that we offer here at Compton provide a real opportunity for those working in palliative care and in lymphoedema to further develop the knowledge and skills necessary for them to be effective practitioners.  Students studying with us benefit from small group sizes, high quality teaching/facilitation and exceptional levels of personal support.

“Our partnership with the University is a central element of the professional development opportunities we offer and we are delighted that the partnership with the University has been renewed for another five years.”

Under the terms of the partnership, students can study a range of accredited modules and courses in the area of palliative and end of life care and lymphoedema. Modules can be studied as part of a pathway, or alternatively as stand-alone modules. All of the courses offered can be studied flexibly around other commitments, on a part time basis, and are mostly delivered at Compton Care’s Learning and Professional Development Centre.
