Programme for Newly Qualified Social Worker conference in Edinburgh announced

The School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh has announced details of their 2018 conference for Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSW).

The theme of the NQSW Conference this year is Building the future: Shaping our social work identity and it will take place on May 31 at the George Square campus of the University.

This one-day conference, which is free to attend, is a great opportunity to come together for lectures, discussions and workshops, to connect and to re-connect. It is open to all newly qualified social workers in Scotland (up to two years since graduation), and social work students (final year, master, PhD or equivalent).

The event is being delivered collaboratively with the University of Edinburgh (in partnership with the Higher Education Heads of Social Work Group), Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services, Scottish Social Services Council, the Scottish Association of Social Workers, Social Work Scotland and the Scottish Government.

15:15 – 16:00 Jo McFarlane

Jo McFarlane is a poet who has lived in Edinburgh all her life and studied languages and philosophy and gained a postgraduate degree in Community Education at the University of Edinburgh. She has worked in various voluntary sector roles, mainly in the field of advocacy, and has published several collections of poetry, articles and essays. The themes she writes about include creativity, volunteering, spirituality, social justice, diversity, mental health and childhood trauma – drawing on her own experience of these – as well as comic verse and observational pieces on everything under the moon. Jo tells how her artistic side helped her conquer the mental illness that threatened to destroy her.

Workshops

There will be a range of workshops available to sign up for on the day. Most workshops are given in both session 1 and session 2. More information about all the workshops will be sent in advance to participants, and signing up for workshops will be possible at the time of registration.

The event is hosted at the George Square campus of the University of Eidnburgh. The address is 50 George Square, Edinburgh EH8 9JU. The venue is fully accessible. Organisers strongly recommend travelling by public transport as there is very limited parking in the area due to street maintenance.
