A genetic breakthrough will allow dyslexia to be diagnosed in unborn babies, it was revealed yesterday. Scientists from Edinburgh University have helped unravel the gene sequence that determines a person’s ability to work with letters and numbers.

A former Lochaber care worker broke down while giving evidence at an employment tribunal in Inverness yesterday. Sandra Bolton, 58, of 40 Banff Crescent, Fort William is claiming constructive dismissal alleging her employers, Crossroads (Lochaber) Care Attendants Scheme, treated her in an oppressive way.

A campaign aimed at tackling violence and aggression towards staff in GP practices will be launched today by Health Minister Andy Kerr. The poster and leaflet campaign pack is being sent to more than 1000 GP practices across Scotland as they gear up for the busy winter period – usually one of the worst times for incidents of physical and verbal abuse in surgeries.

People with slower reaction times and a bad memory are more likely to die from a heart attack, a study has suggested. Dr Beverly Shipley from Edinburgh University surveyed the mental agility of more than 6,400 people from across Britain over the past two decades.

Kinship Carers, who are left to look after children of family members, urgently need financial support and their role should be legally recognised. Professor Jane Aldgate, who conducted research for the Social Work Inspection Agency into children who are looked after by relatives, will tell a conference in Glasgow this week that the “postcode lottery” of financial provisions given to kinship carers must be halted.

Glasgow’s children’s services are set for a radical overhaul following a decision by Glasgow City Council’s Executive Committee. As part of a four-year-plan, a greater emphasis will be placed upon ensuring vulnerable young people remain within their own homes. The new direction will also see the current provision for children’s residential units either replaced or upgraded to reflect modern standards.

A former social worker who carried out an eight-year campaign of abuse in two children’s homes was jailed for life yesterday. John Marshall, 61, who targeted children as young as three to be groomed for his future pleasure, was told by the judge, Lord Brailsford, that he would have to spend 12 years in jail before being considered for parole.

Many of them sat in the back of the court as Lord Brailsford handed down the sentence. Men and women, many in their 30s, wept and cuddled each other in emotional scenes outside the courtroom. Inside, one woman challenged Marshall to look at her.

Clean prison cells and well-trained staff could cut violence among the UK’s most dangerous inmates, a report to the British Psychological Society claims. Psychologist Dr Lorraine Johnstone found environmental factors hugely affected prisoners’ behaviour. She identified risk factors at a Scottish jail which should help all prison and secure hospital staff. They included staff experience, a prison’s history of violent attacks and the physical state of jail cells.

A proposed law aimed at protecting the vulnerable will frighten people from volunteering in the community, a cross-party group of MSPs said yesterday. The Vulnerable Groups Bill was meant to safeguard children following the Soham murders by introducing more checks on people who work with youngsters or vulnerable adults. However, the finance committee raised questions about whether the new legislation represented “value for money” and would contribute to a decline in volunteer numbers.

Young offenders are being helped back on the straight and narrow – by horses. The animals are sensitive enough to pick up the innermost feelings of those near them. Their reaction can have a life-changing effect. A recent course proved successful and plans are now under way to repeat the operation with another group of offenders. The horses are also helping children with learning difficulties.
