Entries are being invited for this year’s Mind Journalist of the Year award. The mental health charity is looking for news and feature articles which responsibly report mental health issues in a non-stereotyping way, which have been published in the local, national or consumer press.

{mosimage}The new statistics show that some Primary Care Trusts – who are responsible for deciding who gets and who pays for continuing care – record over 40 times more people continuing care as a proportion of their population than others. While local anomalies explain some of the most extreme figures, it cannot fully account for the scale of the differences.

Continuing care in a care home means that it is fully-funded by the NHS, which includes all accommodation, food and nursing and personal care costs.

At home it means personal care as well as health care is provided free.  Anyone whose “primary need for care is a health need” should be eligible – but many unfairly miss out.

Rotherham; Newbury and Community; Ashton, Leigh and Wigan; Eden Valley; and Central Suffolk all give continuing care to just 0.5 people per 10,000 adults  – this compares to over 15 PCTs that give over 20 people per 10,000 adults continuing care.

Some areas have worryingly low percentages of their populations getting continuing care – such as many PCTs in South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Lancashire and Derbyshire.

“Because their practice is well established and widespread in the delivery of services, and what they do carries significant risk to patients and the public if poorly done”, the Government has announced that it is “planning to introduce statutory regulation for psychotherapists and counsellors and other psychological therapists”.

The number of deaths linked to a hospital bug called Clostridium difficile has outstripped those due to MRSA, latest figures show. Between 2001 and 2005 MRSA was mentioned on one in every 500 death certificates in England and Wales. For C. difficile it was one in every 250.

Teenage girls living in deprived areas are four times more likely to fall pregnant than those living in more affluent areas, official data shows. Office for National Statistics figures reveal 70.9 per 1,000 girls aged 15-17 in deprived areas conceive compared with 16.2 per 1,000 in richer areas.

Home Secretary John Reid has outlined measures to tackle gun crime following a summit at 10 Downing Street with police and community leaders. At the meeting, chaired by PM Tony Blair, tough punishments for those who use other people to look after weapons were confirmed.

Struggling councils risk being left behind as top performers continue to improve at a greater rate, a government watchdog warned today. While overall local authority standards in England are improving, the Audit Commission warned that lower-performing councils would need to “accelerate the pace of improvement” to prevent the gap between high and low performance widening further over time.

{mosimage}Each year the commission measures how well councils are performing across a range of services – from bins to housing benefits – and awards an overall rating of between nought and four stars. This year’s Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) praised councils for improvement in areas such as recycling and adult social care, but identified problems with housing provision and a declining number of libraries and sporting facilities.

The report, published today, showed that 79% of single tier and county councils in England have achieved three and four-star ratings, a 9% improvement on 2005 results. The overall performance of councils continues to improve, with 77% of single tier and county councils improving strongly or improving well, compared to 75% in 2005. For the first time since the CPA began in 2002, there are no councils in the bottom or no-star category.

Thirty-two councils have moved up at least one star rating, while North-east Lincolnshire, which was the only council to achieve a no-star rating last year, has demonstrated rapid improvement and moved up two star categories together with Havering and Waltham Forest. London and the north-east of England are the two areas which contain the highest number of four-star councils, while the West Midlands has two one-star councils and only three that have achieved four-stars.
