New guide aims to warn Welsh youngsters of sexual exploitation

As part of the on-going work to raise awareness of the sexual exploitation of children, Barnardo’s Cymru in conjunction with the Welsh Government has launched a bilingual handbook that warns youngsters of the danger of sexual exploitation.

‘Sexual Exploitation – Sex, Secrets & Lies’, Your Guide examines the risks young people face and explore ways of keeping safe. The colourful, easy to read booklet is illustrated and has been designed to be used by young people as well as  family members and carers who are concerned about the safety of young people.

The brochure can also be used as an educational tool in sexual health clinics, youth centres, social services, schools and by professionals working with young people at risk.

Barnardo’s Cymru Seraf service is the only dedicated service which helps victims of child sexual exploitation in Wales.  The service worked with over eighty children and young people last year.   It is a hidden issue and the true number of children who are victims of sexual exploitation is likely to be much higher.  For victims, the pain of their ordeal and fear that they will not be believed means they are too often scared to come forward.

Yvonne Rodgers, Director Barnardo’s Cymru, said:  “Child sexual exploitation is an illegal activity by people who have power over young people and use it to sexually abuse them.  Barnardo’s believes every child who has been affected by sexual exploitation should have someone to turn to.  Throughout Wales there are young people being groomed with drink and drugs by adults who will then abuse them.  They will feel frightened and alone and unable to see the way out.  We need to highlight the dangers young people face.”

The booklet was formally launched by Gwenda Thomas, Deputy Minister for Social Services, at the University of South Wales on Wednesday October 9th.  Young people have been involved in its design.

Deputy Minister for Social Services Gwenda Thomas said: “Child sexual exploitation is a heinous crime. It is absolutely deplorable and incomprehensible in a civilised society where the care and welfare of our children and young people should be of primary concern.

“The tireless and challenging work that the staff of Barnardo’s Cymru and its Seraf service undertakes each and every day to protect and safeguard children at risk is absolutely essential. It is especially pleasing that we’ve been able to support Barnardo’s work with children and young people to develop and produce this excellent leaflet to help others stay safe.”
