CSSIW enforce closure of Rhondda Care Home
The Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) have announced the cancellation of the registration of the Laurels Care Home in the Rhondda using its enforcement powers.
The process of cancellation was initiated in July 2014 against the Laurels Care Home, because of serious concerns about the standard of care and safety of residents. Further inspections took place and actions were taken to prevent new admissions to the home.
With ongoing concerns about the lack of progress to address the shortcomings that placed residents at risk, inspectors took the view that closure was necessary to safeguard people living in the home.
The provider had the opportunity to make representations against the proposal but the representations were not upheld. The provider made an appeal to the Care Standards Tribunal but this has since been withdrawn and the notice to cancel the registration of the home became effective on 8th January 2015.
Imelda Richardson, Chief Inspector of CSSIW said: “We give great consideration to the closure of any care home – our priority is always the safety and well-being of people living in the home and to ensure they receive the care they deserve.
“Management of the Laurels Care Home failed to provide this to the elderly and vulnerable people it cared for, over a sustained period of time, and therefore closure was necessary.”
Residents have been placed in alternative accommodation and the home has been vacant since mid-November.
