Welsh care workers urged to test new language pilot

The Care Council for Wales (CCW) has launched a new set of resources to encourage better use of the Welsh language in delivering care.

The ‘Use your Welsh’ resources are currently in draft format, and by launching the pilot, the CCW are inviting organisations to test the new resources and provide feedback which will be valuable in finalising this resource to share widely with the sector.

The resource has been developed as part of the CCW’s work on More than Just Words, the Strategic Framework for Welsh Language Services in Health, Social Services and Social Care.

This new resource is available to the sector to pilot on the link below. As part of the document, there is a feedback form, and the CCW welcome your comments so that they can refine the resource to publish later in the year.

About More than Just Words

People who use care services in Wales and their families have highlighted for years the importance of providing suitable and high quality services in Welsh.

The Welsh Language Measure (Wales) 2011 established the Welsh Language Commissioner, a position similar to an ombudsman but operates in the language field.

Two principles underpin the work of the Welsh Language Commissioner, namely:

  •     In Wales, the Welsh language should be treated no less favourably than the English language;
  •     Persons in Wales should be able to live their lives through the medium of the Welsh language if they choose to do so.

The importance of providing good quality Welsh language services in the delivery of health and social services is subject to a strategy by the Welsh Government – More than Just Words – Strategic Framework for Welsh Language Services in Health, Social Services and Social Care.
