Care home fire inquiry under way as staff are praised for actions
Thirty two residents of a Denbighshire care home have been temporarily moved to other accommodation following a fire at the building.
Hafod Y Green, in Trefnant, near Denbigh, was evacuated after a fire was reported on the third floor shortly after 17:30 GMT on Monday.
Some residents have gone to Denbighshire Infirmary and others to the Cysgod y Gaer nursing home in Corwen.
The home’s owners are hoping they can return residents to Hafod y Green fairly soon so as to keep the distress and disruption to a minimum.
At the height of the fire, around 30 firefighters were involved in tackling the flames.
The roof space of the building was badly damaged but no one was injured as a result of the blaze.
Meanwhile, the owner praised his “fabulous” staff for saving the lives of his 32 vulnerable residents.
David Wynne, who owns the Denbighshire family business, said: “I’m gutted but it could have been worse. Nobody has lost their life.
“The staff were fantastic. They are well trained and did such a great job getting people out to an outdoor activities area.”
Mr Wynne praised his 20 workers as “absolutely fabulous”.
He added: “It (a fire) is always tragic. We have got vulnerable adults and in real terms Hafod y Green has become their home.
“But we were fortunate in one respect – it was only down to the training of the staff and their hard work and their due diligence that a fatality was prevented.
“We were evacuating people to as far away as Corwen – and our own staff were doing that. I can’t thank the staff enough.”
It was unclear when the home will re-open.
