£7m cash injection for health research

MORE than £7 million is being invested in better understanding major diseases and developing new treatments for common conditions like cancer and mental illness.

The funding boost was announced by First Minister Carwyn Jones at the Medical Research Council meeting in Wales.

The funding from the Welsh Government’s National Institute for Social Care and Health Research (NISCHR) includes £1.465 million (over three years) for research to speed up diagnosis of thromboembolic disease, the third most common acute cardiovascular disease after cardiac ischemic syndromes and stroke.

This will be undertaken by an expert group including medical and engineering academics and NHS professionals based in Swansea University’s Institute of Life Sciences.

Mr Jones said: “This investment will help to cement Wales on the world stage as a place for cutting- edge research and development.”
