Care home plan for Welsh barracks site
A planning committee has met to decide whether to give the go-ahead to a 90- bed nursing home on the site of an army barracks later.
Shropshire-based Hawk Homes Ltd want to turn part of the Hightown Barracks in Wrexham into a long-term and respite care facility for older people.
Planning officers have recommended that permission for the home is granted.
In consultation, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said military uses of the barracks might impact on occupiers.
The MoD also said the scheme should be amended to ensure large vehicles could come in and out of the site.
The social services also expressed concern at the size of the home and believe the facility could be considered to be “institutional”.
“The development may have a detrimental impact on current provision,” said social services in the planning report.
If approved, the new care home will consist of individual rooms with en-suite facilities and large communal areas.
