Scottish tories unveil respite plan for ‘unsung hero’ carers
People caring for others for more than 50 hours a week will get a fully-funded week of respite under the Conservatives, the party in Scotland has said.
The national carers’ break guarantee would reward the “unsung heroes of our society”, Scottish Conservative health spokesman Jackson Carlaw said.
The Conservatives have pledged to put an extra GBP8 billion a year into the NHS, which would see an additional GBP800 million coming north of the border for Scotland’s health service.
The Scottish Conservatives would then use that money to fund a range of priorities, including the free respite week for carers.
Mr Carlaw (pictured) joined East Renfrewshire candidate Dr David Montgomery at the Wellmeadow Lodge Care Home today to discuss the plans with carers and staff.
Mr Carlaw said: “Carers are the unsung heroes of our society – of that there is no question.
“Without their dedication our public services would collapse under the weight of so many demands.
“That’s why it’s so important we give them all the support we can.
“A fully-funded week of respite can help them take some time for themselves and recharge the batteries.”
Dr Montgomery said: “The Conservatives have pledged an extra GBP8 billion a year for the NHS – that’s GBP800 million annually for Scotland.
“That would make an incredible difference not just to our hospitals, but ease the pressure on staff and services too.
“But it can only be achieved through a strong economy and a Labour government propped up by the SNP with its own damaging agenda would harm the NHS.
“That’s why it is so essential a Conservative government is voted in on May 7.”
