New video produced on assisted suicide law

A new video has been produced by campaigners who back plans to legalise assisted suicide in Scotland.

The video aims to tackle some of the “misconceptions and misunderstandings” surrounding the proposed Assisted Suicide (Scotland) Bill currently being considered by the Scottish Parliament.

The video, produced by the My Life, My Death, My Choice campaign supporting the Bill, is aimed at ensuring that MSPs and the wider public know what measures are included and what is not. Key facts conveyed include about the legislation include:

  •     Limited to those with terminal or life shortening condition
  •     Only those who choose to opt-in will be eligible
  •     Safeguards will protect vulnerable groups
  •     Individual must take final action to end their life
  •     No-one who benefits financially can be involved

Bob Scott, Spokesperson for My Life, My Death, My Choice, said: “Our discussions with MSPs recently have indicated that some are not fully aware of the measures included in the Bill. In particular, some have expressed concern that what is being proposed is euthanasia. We want to make clear that this is not the case and that what is being proposed is very different.”

“We also want to make clear that the Bill only applies to those with a terminal or life-shortening condition and that it is only those who choose to use the provisions of the Bill who will be eligible.”

“The video clearly highlights the broad support for these measures across Scottish society. I hope everyone in Scotland will endorse that view.”

“We know that a significant majority of the Scottish electorate, 69% according to a poll we conducted last year, support the Bill and that over 70% of responses to the Health & Sport Committee consultation were also supportive. It is time for the politicians to catch-up with public opinion and pass this legislation as quickly as possible.”
