£2.4m day care centre opens
THE first day care centre to be completed as part of a transformation of services for older people has been opened by Glasgow Lord Provost Sadie Docherty.
Glenwood Day Care Centre in Castlemilk, which has spaces for 30 people each day, was built at a cost of £2.4million. It is one of six planned centres for the elderly along with five, 120 bed care homes.
Glenwood was designed in consultation with service users and provides a high specification of service for older people, including those with dementia.
Matt Kerr, the city council’s social work spokesman, said the new centre was a major step forward in the quality of day care in the city.
He added: “Everyone involved in bringing Glenwood Day Care Centre into use can be hugely proud of their efforts.
“Glenwood is leading the way in what people should expect from day care services for older people in Glasgow.
“The attention to detail in the centre in remarkable and will help ensure people receive a standard of care that is second to none.
“I have no doubt Glenwood will be a vital and treasured part of the community for many years to come. I look forward to the opening of the council’s other day care centres and care homes as the high quality of care found in Glenwood will then be available all across the city.”
The centre includes a range of activity rooms, medical treatment rooms, private space to deliver personal care, a tailored garden accessible from all public rooms and a hairdresser.
The specifications for the centre were developed with direct input from service users, families, carers, staff, dementia experts and social care inspectors.
Three other day centres, which are being built on sites in Possilpark, Pollok and Toryglen, will all share sites with a new care home.
A further two stand alone care homes will be built at Dalmarnock and Knightswood. The Dalmarnock care home in the Athletes’ Village will initially be used as accommodation during the Commonwealth Games but will be refitted once the event is over.
A further two day centres are planned for the North-east and West of the city although sites have still to be confirmed.
