Dundee’s forgotten heroine Mary Lily Walker recalled
Four days of celebrations of Mary Lily Walker, Dundee’s forgotten visionary, concluded with a commemorative service in St Paul’s Cathedral and a family fun day at Grey Lodge Settlement.
Mary Lily Walker transformed the lives of Victorian women and children through her work to develop health and social work services.
She set up the first infant health service in Scotland, the first school of social work in Dundee and gathered evidence of the costs paid by society for poor child health.
Mary Lily Walker, who died 100 years ago, founded the Grey Lodge Settlement which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.
Dr Suzanne Zeedyk, one of the occasion’s organisers, said: “It is time we remember how much she did for our city.”
